Deve82, to be clear, NetSpot is a site survey tool. You need to walk around with your computer and take a large number of measurements to get an accurate map. NetSpot for your iMac would be extremely hard to use (all but impossible) to the point of uselessness.

Sad, but thanks for the amazing work and the great product. Really interested also in what the pro version you’ve hinted at might have :)

This is similar to the last old thread I just brought up, but slm, I ended up just using a Bing Map screenshot (the large outdoor area I need to survey has a terrible map in Google Maps) and it works pretty well. When I re-survey the area soon (adding more AP’s), I’ll be brightening and contrast-enhancing it, but regardless – it worked well.

The reason I bring this thread up, is that you mentioned the ability to define multiple SSID’s as belonging to the same AP. Would a feature like this work to have:

User enters a list of AP’s they’re surveying, with a unique name for the AP, and *all* BSSID’s associated with that AP?

Hi Alex, I got that message from Marisa, it’s no big deal, I have to re-do that entire survey this week anyways, it’s just a tool for me and I know the data point that’s messing with it, so no need for that hassle. I just referenced it so you could see the why – one data point that’s anomalous can really affect the map if, say, I wanted to give these maps to my clients. Which I never would, at least not yet (not without being able to set colors and transparency of the overlay, etc) – clients get a stylized map made in Photoshop. This is a tool for me to start making those maps more accurately. Just an idea for the future so we can make the maps more “client-friendly” by doing things like taking out hot spots made from one oddly strong point. Looking forward to NetSpot 2.0. Any idea when it’ll be out or a public beta test made available? If you need testers, I’d be happy to test it out.

That surprises me, most Android devices will. Windows Phone 7, by design, will not. I applaud Microsoft (rare words for me to say) for taking that stand. I wish more equipment vendors would take the stand to NOT allow connections to hidden SSID’s. And of course, AP and router vendors remove the option.

Thanks Alex! Dunno how I missed that but that’s perfect by hovering them in the popover – exactly what I wanted, and close enough to what the OP wanted I hope it’ll work for them too! Sorry for my blonde moment not finding that on my own, LOL

Nope, not at least for what I’m looking at. I already know and can quickly tell which AP is which. I think what the OP wants (though I can’t be sure obviously), and certainly what I would want, is a way to differentiate between AP’s in the list you get when you click on the map.

Any update on this? I have one anomalous data point in a survey file I did (Marisa has that survey file, I sent it in with regards to some issues, you can kinda see a triangle of stronger coverage due to one point). The point was marked correctly, but for some reason, the signal was especially strong at the moment the point was collected or something? The numbers are accurate but literally only in that one spot (odd reflection or something). It would be great to be able to have a feature to click to remove spots like that which cause the map to be less accurate as a whole.

Such a feature shouldn’t harm survey integrity, because each point’s data should not affect other point’s data. So the app would simply need to re-render without that point in the survey file.

Thanks for your prompt responses to some of the things I noted in my survey files, this is a fantastic project and a great tool!

Alex, I’d go beyond not helping. Not broadcasting your SSID causes you and your neighbors problems. By not broadcasting your SSID, someone else may not see the channel is in use and strong from their location (this mostly being a big deal in apartments), and contribute to interference problems. Also, many devices won’t connect to hidden SSID’s. Broadcast your SSID’s like you’re meant to, for everyone’s sake. And use WPA2-AES for real security.

Interesting idea, but one that would be very specific to one (rather rare to be honest) vendor’s product. I run networks with far more than two AP’s, and have so far used Netspot to help with one large installation, and didn’t have too much trouble differentiating AP’s, but it would be nice to have a way to give AP’s a custom name to display in the signal strength comparison list.

However, I do not use Apple equipment in any of my installs, so I’d like to see a more generic solution. Being able to give each AP a name would do the trick nicely, but make sure the SSID is also still visible.
