    Hi.

Just downloaded from the app store and surveyed my house.

I have two access points, one is an Airport Extreme, and the other is an Airport Express. The Express is used to extend the network of the extreme.

Both show up on the maps with the same label which is the base station name of the Extreme as shown in the Airport Utility The Express had a different base station name, but this doesn’t display on the map. This makes it hard to see the relative strength of the two APs at different locations.

If the base station name is available ‘over the air’ then I’d like the option to show that on the survey both for the location of the access point and in the pop up that is shown when you click on a location on the map, and in the list of detected WiFi networks. If it isn’t available automatically then might it be possible to manually add it.

Interesting idea, but one that would be very specific to one (rather rare to be honest) vendor’s product. I run networks with far more than two AP’s, and have so far used Netspot to help with one large installation, and didn’t have too much trouble differentiating AP’s, but it would be nice to have a way to give AP’s a custom name to display in the signal strength comparison list.

However, I do not use Apple equipment in any of my installs, so I’d like to see a more generic solution. Being able to give each AP a name would do the trick nicely, but make sure the SSID is also still visible.

You’ll be able to assign custom aliases to APs in NetSpot 2. However, let me check it with my team concerning the main issue outlined here.

Seems like custom AP aliases should resolve the issue you are having. In NetSpot 1.x you can do the following: hover the name of the network in the sidebar, you will see the hint with additional details about it. Note the BSSID (AP’s MAC-address). Now, whenever you click the map, you will be able to see which AP’s signal strength (or other parameters) you see in the popup. Does this help?

Nope, not at least for what I’m looking at. I already know and can quickly tell which AP is which. I think what the OP wants (though I can’t be sure obviously), and certainly what I would want, is a way to differentiate between AP’s in the list you get when you click on the map.

Sorry, forgot to mention that you might need to hover the networks in the map’s popover as well.

Thanks Alex! Dunno how I missed that but that’s perfect by hovering them in the popover – exactly what I wanted, and close enough to what the OP wanted I hope it’ll work for them too! Sorry for my blonde moment not finding that on my own, LOL

    Dear Mark,

I’ve sent you the link to download new beta build of NetSpot 2.x. The feature which allows you to add aliases to selected APs is available in this build. We will be waiting for the test results from you.
