When in discover mode I’m analysing a particular wifi connection and on the Signal and noise graph, it’s intermittently leaving gaps in both signal and noise readings. Why is this happening and what does it mean?

    Doovers:
How many Wifi devices are within range when you see the gaps?
How many 2.4 GHz and how many 5 GHz?
Also what model of computer and OS are you running?
I’m seeing this too and I’m wondering if the gaps occur when the scanner is using the radio to check frequencies other than the one currently being used for a data connection.
We have about 30 Meraki APs and we see the gaps on newer Macs (2014 MacBook Airs) with Mavericks but not on an older unibody Macbook running Mavericks.

Just ran it again now and there are 8 x 2.4GHz, and 2 x 5GHz. Both 5GHz are mine, Netgear Nighthawk R7000 router and Netgear range extender and 3 of the 2GHz, R7000, Extender, and original ISP Router. All mine and the neighbours signals are leaving gaps which suggest it’s probably a software/hardware issue as opposed to the wifi signal actually dropping out…

I’m running Yosemite on a Late 2013 MBPr.

Also worth noting is that I didn’t notice any gaps when I was running Mavericks…

Do you, guys, think it’s anyhow related to the known OS X 10.10’s WiFi issues (macrumors.com/2014/10/30/yosemite-wi-fi-connection-issues)?

Is the ping to the router stable or also dropping some packets randomly? We are looking into this as well. I personally experienced the same on my MB Air with Yosemite, but it got somehow self-resolved.

No I don’t think so as I’m not experiencing those symptoms. And no packet loss in the test I just did…

@doovers, just confirming, “no packet loss” during ping, and no gaps in NetSpot? Or gaps _with_ stable WiFi connection?

Sorry I should have said I was still getting gaps. Also, for info, ping times increased significantly with netspot running.

I too am able to get pings through during the drops – yes they can be slow but they are getting through which means I can’t trust the info the graph…if there were really no signal, the pings would not get through.

So this feels more like a software issue and it might go something like this:
Netspot asks the Radio for a info about a wireless channel
Radio replies with SSID, signal strength, etc
Meanwhile Radio is also busy maintaining a network connection
(during my test it would be a series of pings)
Netspot keeps asking for the same info
Radio gets annoyed: “Can’t you see I’m busy here!” and ignores Netspot
Netspot reports signal strength of zero and graphs it even though the actual answer should be “null” or “info not available”

I’m hoping someone from Netspot will comment on this thread

Working on this now. Need more time and testing.

@doovers, can you try the following build for me, and let me know if you still experience the gaps in the chart?

Hi again, can you try this with OS X 10.10.1 update? It does seem that the problem is being caused by Apple’s framework, and they seem to have accepted that within the latest bug fix: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1779

    Hi Alex,

Sorry but I just ran the app and I’m still getting the dropouts despite updating yosemite earlier today…

Seems like you are not alone with the issue, and we are not alone struggling with the fix: http://www.macworld.com/article/2849258/mac-users-say-yosemite-10-10-1-update-did-nothing-to-fix-wi-fi.html

I suppose we’ll have to keep waiting for now unfortunately…
