NetSpot evolves into the final stable release. Thanks to everyone who participated in our beta version testing, and to everyone who spent time finding bugs and sharing their WiFi scanning experience with us!

Here’s NetSpot 1.1. It’s the first official stable release of NetSpot. And it IS STILL FREE. We added a heap of new long-awaited features, and voided a number of bugs and inconsistencies out of the beta version. You should be getting the updater reminder right now. Go get it, and enjoy. Off we are now for an AppStore compliant release.

You can get NetSpot 1.1 here.

This looks like a great start. I just downloaded and started doing some testing. Map imports work great and the scaling is very easy as well. However, when I go to start the survey after outlining the premise to be surveyed, Netspot is saying that there are no wifi networks detected. I have 6 APs up and running on various channels both 2.4 and 5gHz with various SSIDs from wep to wpa2-psk. Any thoughts. I am on a mac book pro fully updated on 10.6.8. I also receive an error:

    An error occurred while scanning
Would you like to try again?

    Unknown Error

Hi there, it would be much better if you could create a separate thread for this issue. Let me find out which troubleshooting steps we should run in your case. Hold on…

Ok, the easiest what we can do now is to ask you for a feedback sent directly from NetSpot _AFTER_ you experience the unknown error again, this will help us find out what exactly is wrong. There’s a “Send feedback” button on the toolbar or the same option in the Menu. Thanks

I too, experienced this problem but found the first issue to be a human interface problem. When I’ve drawn my map and gotten my dimensioning done, and before I actually scan, the displayed message “No wifi networks detected” is misleading and confusing. I kept thinking that something was wrong, not realizing that I had a couple more clicks before actual detection would begin only with my click on “Start Scan”.

After clicking my location and initiating the scan, the veil was lifted. My scan did not produce any errors, fortunately.

Great notice. We’ll definitely improve that issue. Thanks

I have not had the issue since my post. I didn’t think mine was an HI problem. Either way, if I see it again I will use the send feedback button.

Is there anyway to select a particular SSID to check coverage for? Is there anyway to only connect to a specific AP? For new greenfield deployments, I typically use my own AP that I connect to and then do my walkabout connected to that AP. For a post install verification, I would connect to the SSID used by the customer to check coverage throughout and make sure the signal levels and power levels were there.

To check the coverage of a specific network only you just need to select it in the sidebar after the scan is complete. However, if you want to survey only a specific AP, it’s not yet possible in NetSpot, though I’ll discuss this with my team and let you know if we implement this and when. Thanks for this feature request.

Ok, got the update from the team. While this is technically possible and might be implemented in one of the next updates, it won’t necessarily be faster to scan 1-2-3 selected networks (this requires 1-2-3 calls to your Wi-Fi adapter) rather than polling the whole range once.

    Ladies, Gents

impressive tool and the first time I see a working app for Mac. Well done!

    Couple of suggestions:

    – make a little video to explain what needs to be done
    – explain somewhere what the uninitiated should be looking for, ie. what is S/N level, what values are right – same goes for other measurements. Would make life a little easier.
    – Have a trouble-shooting section in case your mapping yields bad results. What to change (channels, throughput, positioning of access points…)

In other words take of your engineering hat, out on your Apple hat: What does the user experience and how do we make it easier for him.

Thanks for a great start, here’s hoping for more improvements.

Thanks a lot! Glad you liked NetSpot.

The video is actually available at the website… right on the main page.

That’s a good idea and will definitely be done some time.

That’s definitely a nice feature. And we are already planning it in the next release.

There’s a new build of NetSpot 1.1 (1.1.284, ~4MB) available for download. We fixed the annoying bug with slow scanning on Lion, and EXTREMELY slow networks polling on Snow Leopard. Please update your copies of NetSpot. We are ready for new feature requests and bug reports. Thanks

Great App… thanks… it helped me relocate my AirPort Expresses to provide better coverage in my one-level house (Suggestion: Hmmmm, some people have multi-level houses and some notes on how to deal with this might help them).

I wonder if it’s possible to add the device names to the individual pop-ups when clicking on an access point?

Also, I note that 3 of my Expresses display “Mode PHY 802.11g” whereas one displays “Mode PHY 802.11n”. I wonder if the 802.11n is a later or more recent version of the AirPort EXpress. I do have the Time Capsule 802.11n (3rd Generation) providing my home network, if that helps.

I wonder if this App can be made for the Apple iPad as well….

    Again… great App.
