mike909ParticipantHow does one interpret the Signal To Interference-ratio (SIR) values?
The goal is to identify Co-channel interference, or same-channel AP’s operating within close range of eachother.I would guess that the numbers (when hovering over the pin or near the pin) represent the dB difference between all the same-channel AP’s, however sometimes it’s a positive number & sometimes negative.
Example data here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bj7zvfgNH8eCqVQlxrs2OLFvoEif_weLZCWAX_svFWQ/pub
1. How exactly is that number calculated?
2. How does Netspot determine co-channel AP’s when each AP is broadcasting multiple SSID’s?
3. Is the number on the pin always representative of the ‘worst-case’ scenario, ie worst-cochannel AP’s?
4. How does the SIR heatmap (under passive-scanning) differ from the ‘Troubleshooting–>overlapping channels’ heatmap?

Alex – NetSpotKeymasterI assume this is being taken care of via email. I’m sorry for the delay with replying here.

mike909ParticipantYes. I’ll go ahead and reply here with an answer to this question for the benefit of others.

Alex – NetSpotKeymasterLate quick follow-up to your questions from our other thread.
> How exactly is that number calculated?
It is a difference between the signal level of this network and the max signal level of another network.
> How does NetSpot determine co-channel AP’s when each AP is broadcasting multiple SSID’s?
If the BSSIDs of the networks differ only in the last digit, they are considered to be one AP and the interference is not calculated in this case.
> Is the number on the pin always representative of the ‘worst-case’ scenario, ie worst-cochannel AP’s?
Yes, it is.
> How does the SIR heatmap (under passive-scanning) differ from the ‘Troubleshooting–>overlapping channels’ heatmap?
The Troubleshooting heatmaps are the same as visualizations but divided into critical levels instead of gradient colors.

mike909ParticipantThanks for adding. I should have done so as well.
Feature request has been submitted to improve this to identify CCI, relative to “selected APs which are closest in RSSI to device”. In other words, show the SIR on the drop-pin, relative to that drop-pin (we don’t care about CCI occurring on APs the client would not connect to).March 1, 2016 at 2:57 am #3423
Alex – NetSpotKeymasterAnd we ARE considering this improvement now. Thanks again!
