One thing that I’ve noticed is that is that if I’m testing a dual band site and my machine loses connectivity to the 5 GHz band and re-establishes via 2.4 GHz, the machine will never attempt to re-establish a connection via 5 GHz. I currently have a survey that has half its iperf3 numbers reported for 5 Ghz and half for 2.4 GHz; I’d really like to be able to show just how bad the 5 GHz performance is with the iperf3 results, but by the time I noticed that I was no longer on 5 Ghz, I had done half an hour of data collection.

With that in mind, a couple of feature suggestions:

    1. Is it possible to force NetSpot to gather data via both frequency bands? This would be particularly useful when a site is using “SSID Name” for both the 2.4 GHz band and the 5 GHz band. It would be nice to show both sets of numbers for all sample points. Naturally, this would extend survey times, as each sample point would have to be run twice.

    2. Alternatively, it would be nice to force a single band for testing.

    3. If #1 isn’t possible, could NetSpot (optionally) force the testing machine to disassociate from the SSID and re-associate at each sample point?

Very pertinent questions, Chris. I know I’m a bit too late to follow-up, sorry for that. I am speaking to my team now and will let you know which options are available here.

We verified this again, and it seems Mac OS X will not let you (or us, or NetSpot) choose the exact AP to connect to on multi-SSID networks. Even the WiFi menu in the top-bar lists only networks, no exact APs. The only solution we can think of would be having separate names for 2.4 and 5GHz APs.

I’m duplicating this comment in to topics I created where it might be appropriate:

Thinking about this, it occurs to me that disabling and re-enabling Wi-Fi on the surveying Mac would probably cause it to re-associate using the best-performing AP, and would further cause the Mac to re-associate using the best-performing connection.

I would be interested in whether it might be possible to have an option in which NetSpot kills and then re-establishes the Wi-Fi in order to ensure that the Mac performing the survey is connected to the closest AP and connected at the best possible speed.

Note, this also does seem like an incredibly hackish way around this issue.
