It would be nice if NetSpot could provide a way to distinguish between APs broadcasting the same SSIDs in various contexts. I’ve noticed at least two places where things are a little hard to distinguish:

    1. In the AP detection and placement on a floorpan, a single physical AP with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz transmitters will appear twice with the same name on the map if it is broadcasting the same SSID on both frequency bands. The end result is that you get APs “SSID” and “SSID” shown on the map with very little to distinguish them.

    2. In addition, in some of the sample point pop-ups you see the same SSID show up multiple times under the same name.

Would it be possible to do something like include the frequency band and BSSID of the AP on the map and in the sample point pop-ups to make things easier to read? Or something like this to allow distinguishing of the APs from one another?

Yeah, we hear you, we agree it would be handy to have these issues resolved. They’ve been sitting around for a while now. Let me speak with my team and see if we have any progress in regards to this.

    Okay. Thanks!

Ok, consider #1 in the works. Regarding #2, hover the name, you will see a hint with the BSSID. Acceptable?

In general, yes, these would both be acceptable solutions. #1 is great for the printed final report and relating to information seen in the pop-up, while #2 is great for the actual understanding of the network via the project file.

    Thanks!

Do you think you could add aliases to every BSSID of interest? This will help to improve the readability of reports a lot. It might require some additional manual work though.

That would be relatively straightforward for a small network, but once you get into campus projects that have dozens of APs, that will become onerous, especially since the aliases are a bit arbitrary.

For instance, for a project in small development shop it would be easy enough to label things “Dev 2.4 GHz AP”, “Dev 5 GHz AP”, “Support 2.4 GHz AP”, and so on. However, once you get into a school with dozens of APs, you’d have to label a bit more arbitrarily “Room 205 5 GHz AP”, and the problem that would grow from that would be that as soon as you move something to another location, your alias needs to change in order to remain geographically accurate.

I suppose you could label the APs “001”, “002”, “003”, and so on, but as you point out above, the labor goes up quite a bit. Ultimately, I think it bypasses the issue a bit, as I was looking for an easy visual association of BSSID to map location without needing to switch back and forth between reading the AP list and looking at a legend that’s not on the map.
