I’m surveying a church building and getting some inaccurate heat maps. The building has the main sanctuary (big open room), a balcony and a basement containing several rooms. There is an AP in the sanctuary balcony, overhanging the sanctuary proper. When setting up the survey, I selected “office with privacy walls” because of the rooms in the basement. Anyway, when I surveyed the balcony, I got a heatmap showing a good SNR, but when I surveyed the sanctuary proper, basically the same open room, I got very poor SNR on the heat map. Close to 0dB. But in reality, the signal in the sanctuary is very strong. What did I do wrong?

    A few clarifications needed…

Did you try to re-survey? Can you check the momentarily SNR via the Discover mode when you are in the sanctuary? Are you sure the survey is done according to our recommendations: /help/tips-and-hints-running-a-wireless-site-survey/ ?

I did not try to resurvey yet. I did check the discover mode after I found that the heat map was off. It showed good signal levels while in the sanctuary. I did do the survey according to the recommendations.

It would really help if you could try the Survey and Discover modes at the same time and see whether one of them really produces wrong data. That would be extremely helpful to verify before we dig deeper into your case. Thanks

I resurveyed today and the SNR map looked appropriate. I did notice that the AP for that room was unchecked in the list of APs on the left. I’m not sure if they were unchecked on the last survey. I checked them and everything looked right. So my question is why would some of those be checked or unchecked (I didn’t do it myself), and would that have made the difference between the two surveys?

2 surveys taken at various times would always be different, depending on survey conditions, AP stability, etc., this deviation will most probably be negligible. There are plenty of selection options that NetSpot provides, it’s possible that one of them was triggered during the original survey: /help/select-network/
